Special Projects

Shannon Rail Services is a resourceful and flexible company keen to extend its operations where there is a requirement for expertise that may be more difficult for a larger organisation to accommodate. We are therefore pleased to consider special projects and welcome approaches from the industry, including light rail operators.

Case study 1: ZSL Whipsnade Zoo operates a very popular two mile long 2’6” gauge railway that carries many thousands of visitors every year – millions in fact since it opened in 1970. Maintenance and repairs are carried out on a cyclical basis, but large projects present a challenge for ZSL staff without bringing in outside assistance. Working for ZSL Shannon Rail Services undertook a formation renewal, drainage installation and re-sleeper project on a 300 yard stretch of plain line. Rails were transposed to equal the wear and relaid using new baseplates and pandrol clips in place of the original spikes. The works had to be completed between January 2 and the February half-term holiday week, the only period in the year when the railway is non-operational. Despite the extremely wet weather in winter 2014 we finished the task with a week to spare, handing back on 7 February.

Case study 2: Easter 2013 was a major landmark for RSAR (Reading Station Area Redevelopment) with a ten day blockade planned. Our client Carillion Rail the principal contractor had hundreds of personnel booked into two major hotels who required transportation to and from a number of access points with very limited parking. Timely and smooth shift changeovers were critical to the programme. Special arrangements were needed for safety critical staff. Standby transport was required for train drivers and for contingency purposes. With very little time to plan we engaged with a local coach operator Horseman Coaches to help us deliver an effective solution to the problem that operated smoothly throughout the blockade.
